Team BIGFOOT’s Rick Long Not Calling It Quits Just Yet

(Hazelwood, MO – BIGFOOT PR) – When rumors began to spread around the monster truck fan community a few months ago that long-time BIGFOOT® driver Rick Long was hanging up his driving gloves for good, many fans and competitors alike were quick to express their disappointment, often lamenting that Rick should come back for “one more season” in an effort to clinch yet another Monster Nationals racing title. So is Rick really leaving for good?

Word on the street is, not just yet.

With a pair of back-to-back Monster Nationals indoor racing championships behind the wheel of the E-3 Spark Plugs BIGFOOT #15 to his credit, the prospect of capturing a third title in as many years appeals to Long on various levels, not the least of which would be the fact that for the first time in the history of the tour, he will be joined by a team truck for the duration of the season.

Rick Long captured the 2011 Monster Nationals Racing Championship in his E3 Spark Plugs BIGFOOT #15.

So, will having a bit of extra firepower in his corner compel him to return to the seat for one last hurrah?

“I think [for Rick] the addition of Darron [Schnell] and the Vi-COR/Celmanax BIGFOOT #11 to the 2012 Monster Nationals tour roster is a pretty compelling reason to run one more season,” said BIGFOOT VP of Sponsorships & Business Development Bob Trent. “Any chance you get to run with one of your teammates is a bonus, especially for an entire season. Extra help in the pits and the chance to put two BIGFOOT trucks in the finals each time is definitely a good thing. Plus, Rick has always been vocal about wanting to help tutor the next class of drivers working their way up the ranks!”

Since beginning his driving career at BIGFOOT early in the 2000’s after having been a shop mechanic for some time, Long has matured into one of the most consistent and fearless drivers on the team’s roster. However, more than eight years of full-time travel on the road for the 50-year old Grafton, IL resident has taken its toll, as it does for most touring professionals. As Long himself explained “Even though my kids are almost grown up, I still miss spending time with them and the rest of my family, especially my grandson.” Long then added, with a chuckle, “Plus, I have a little bit of boating and motorcycle riding to catch up on!”

Rick Long is a three time champion and will return in 2011 to defend his back to back Monster Nationals Racing Championships.

For the BIGFOOT team, replacing Long behind the wheel of BIGFOOT #15 will not be the easiest of tasks, whenever the time may does actually come. Trent offered some insight as to how the process might take place: “At the moment, we seem to have an abundance of equipment; it’s just a matter of finding the right people to put in the seats. We’ll see how things progress; I think a lot of people look at the truck numbers and think ‘Oh, #15 must be better than #14’. Maybe that was the case at one point, but it definitely isn’t now. For us, the challenge is finding the right personality to represent our team and our sponsors, and the right driving style to keep our fans happy, because across the board I think our fleet is pretty even, regardless of the chassis number!”

BIGFOOT VP of Research, Technology, & Driver Development Jim Kramer shared his thoughts on the issue as well: “Truthfully, I look for Rick to continue driving through the bulk of the first quarter of 2012. I know he wants to try for one more championship before he retires from driving, and I know it means a lot to him to help out Darron in his first run through a full points series.” Kramer went on to explain that “Our driver pool at BIGFOOT is growing deeper every year, especially as we bring our newer guys up through the ranks alongside veterans like Rick, Larry [Swim], andDan [Runte]. But heading into 2012 I think it will be great to have both a veteran driver in Rick and a sophomore driver in Darron running alongside each other. It’s going to be a great cross-section of our driving program for the fans.”

“Even as tough as the road life is, it’s not an easy decision to walk away from putting on a good show for the fans,” said Long. “Making the fans happy is one of my favorite parts of the job. It makes for a late night after a show, but it’s a cool feeling when you know every last fan in that arena got their souvenir autographed or their question answered. Going for it one more time for the fans is definitely at the front of my mind right now.”

So with all that being said, is it safe to assume Rick will be back for a 2012 “farewell tour”? Perhaps the best answer to that question came from Long himself.

“We’ll see how things go between now and January, but I’m definitely not peeling my name off the truck yet!”

BIGFOOT 4×4, Inc. Unveils Brand New BIGFOOT #18

(Hazelwood, Missouri – BIGFOOT PR) – It has been a long time since legendary BIGFOOT® driver and nine-time National Champion Dan Runte has been this excited about an upcoming racing season, and that is pretty impressive, considering that Runte has been at the forefront of Team BIGFOOT’s racing program for nearly two decades! But, in 2012, while Runte tries to win his TENTH championship, he will be piloting a brand-new BIGFOOT truck, and he can’t wait to get racing!

As frequent followers of the BIGFOOT team can attest, the last two seasons have been banner years for Runte. He posted a pair of top-shelf seasons in the Lucas Oil 4-Wheel Jamboree series, netting a runner-up in 2010 and a Championship in 2011. He also swept every single race for the last two years at Salt Lake City’s Maverik Clash of the Titans Figure-8 Invitational, appeared at numerous Firestone retailers, and won various other races around the country. And, next week, he will, again, make a trip to Germany to visit US military personnel with fellow Summit Racing drivers Jason Line and Greg Anderson.

The incredible new body used on BIGFOOT #18 comes from the world of short course off road racing.

So what exactly has Runte so excited about 2012? He will be driving the all-new BIGFOOT #18. 2012 will mark the first time since 1992 that Runte (or anyone on Team BIGFOOT) has stepped into a new, totally-redesigned BIGFOOT truck! BIGFOOT #18 will be on a totally new chassis and will include a new suspension design and a totally new style of monster truck body. And Runte is way past ready!

“Our current chassis’ have more than proven its worth,” said Runte. “But for this new truck, we wanted and needed to try some new things that our current setup won’t quite let us get away with. I think it will take a little bit of time to get dialed in and it’s going to take me a while to get used to it, but I’m so ready it’s not even funny. This thing’s gonna be an animal.”

Another look at the stunning new ride for Dan Runte in 2012.

The completion of BIGFOOT #18 will mark the culmination of almost a year’s worth of designing, fabrication, and planning. BIGFOOT VP of Sponsorships & Business Development Bob Trent started the whole project late last year when he pointed out that BIGFOOT had been standing still too long with the use of the same chassis for so many years. He then came up with some really different ideas, including a new chassis and a new body style.

“We came to a crossroads last year where it was like ‘Do we keep modifying what we have, or do we start from scratch?’ The chassis design we have used up to now has been one of the most resilient the industry has ever seen, but we hit the point where we needed a clean slate to try some of the new ideas we had.”

Trent went on to explain that “Bryan Bertoletti, our lead mechanic and fabricator, helped make sure the design I found would give us the flexibility to do what we wanted, while still allowing us the ability to add to our fleet in a cost-effective and timely manner. We are just too busy maintaining our current fleet to start something completely from scratch.”

Bertoletti went on to explain: “The chassis design we currently rely on has served us very well since we developed the first one years ago (for BIGFOOT #10), since then we’ve refined that design significantly. Even with all the curve balls we face from tracks, etc., our trucks have consistently met the challenge. But we needed to move forward. We wanted a lower center of gravity, additional reinforcement in various places, and a longer wheelbase.”

Team BIGFOOT had been working around the clock to finish #18 for the 2012 racing season. Pictured left to right, Jim Kramer, Bob Brown, Nick Dvorchak, Dan Runte, Chris Ludwig, Bryan Bertoletti and John Peterson.

BIGFOOT #18 will feature close to 4 ½ inches of additional shock travel in the front, improved driveline restraint systems, nearly 6 inches of additional wheelbase, improved shock mounting angles, and a mass of additional steel tubing in critical areas, all of which will allow the truck to better sustain the abuses it is expected to encounter in its first season of competition. All of this will be topped off with a radical new truck body that can only be described as “extreme.”

Runte is tentatively scheduled to debut his new ride at the Toughest Monster Truck Tour event in Southaven, MS (Memphis) during the second weekend of January, the first stop in his quest to capture the inaugural Toughest Monster Truck/Monster Nation dual-championship. The TMT/MN partnership is the first time the monster truck industry has ever seen two separate series’ combine points for a single title for racing and a single title for freestyle. Following the completion of the indoor tour in March, Runte will head outdoors in May to defend his Lucas Oil 4-Wheel Jamboree championship in Springfield, MO.

But, for now, Runte is just ready to get in his new truck! “I’m stoked about the New Year, but around here its best to take things one day at a time. We’ve got a lot of testing to do with this new truck before we try to win races with it. But I’m pretty optimistic about how testing is going to go, and once we’ve got that under our belt it’s going to be GAME ON. The guys here are ready to see what this thing can do, and so are the fans. They’ve been waiting pretty patiently,” said Runte.

Perhaps Runte summed it best during a break in construction while talking to one of the team’s other drivers: “I’m ready to go hit something big with this thing!”

BIGFOOT would like to thank everyone for their efforts on this project, with a special “THANKS” to Jim Kramer, John Peterson, Chris Ludwig, Nick Dvorchak, and Bob Brown!

The Allen Report: IMTM Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony 2011

(Coverage By Christopher Allen, Photos By Jim Allen)

It’s important to preserve the history and rise to fame of the monster truck industry so that the next generation of fans can see for themselves how the sport started. Auburn, Indiana’s own Jeff Cook of Shotgun Harry intends to accomplish this by doing two things: operating a museum preserving historic monster trucks and, starting with the inaugural induction ceremony held on November 19th, 2011, hold an annual Hall of Fame ceremony. This year’s ceremony was a big success with over 250 people attending and nine historic monsters and two active monsters on display for all to see.

The first class of Hall of Fame inductees included: Bob Chandler of Bigfoot, Dan Degrasso of Beast and Everett Jasmer of USA-1 (who each had their original monster truck creations on display at the museum that night), Fred Shafer of Bearfoot, Jack Wilman Sr. of Taurus and Jeff Dane of King Kong and Awesome Kong. Fred was unable to attend the event, so Scott Hess of Hercules and a Team Bearfoot driver, filled in to accept the award on Fred’s behalf.

TMB Contributors Jim & Christopher Allen stand in front of the legendary USA-1 at the 1st Annual IMTM Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

Other trucks on display as well as those mentioned above were John Nowacki’s Mud Monster, Allen Tura’s Goliath, Allen Pezo’s Predator 1, Eric Howe’s High Horse and Tod Weston’s Black Knight and Kid KJ’s Monster Bear. As each individual was inducted into the Hall of Fame, a video tribute was shown highlighting their career. Each then got an opportunity to share their feelings and a story or two. Some members of the first class explained where the names of their trucks came from and others why they stepped out of the spotlight and/or sold their trucks. In the end, every new member of the Hall of Fame got a standing ovation from the crowd.

At long last, the careers of the men above, billed as “The Originals” in monster truck history have had their careers come full circle. As far as the future is concerned, Mr. Chandler is focused on the debut of Bigfoot #18. Mr. Jasmer is looking to carry on with his deal with Chandler Lloyd and possibly sell the entire USA-1 operation. Mr. Degrasso just may end up deciding to bring the Beast back into the public eye as a modernized truck with a tube frame and nitrogen shocks.

To find out more about the museum or plan a visit, check out www.MonsterMuseum.org. On that note, until the first quarter of 2012, thank you for reading, thanks to Jeff Cook and the entire IMTM staff for their wonderful hospitality, enjoy the photos and cheer on!

Dan Runte, Team Summit Drivers to Visit Troops in Germany

(Tallmadge, Ohio – Summit Racing PR) – Team Summit stars Greg Anderson (NHRA Pro Stock), Jason Line (NHRA Pro Stock), Rickie Jones (ADRL Pro Nitrous), and Dan Runte (Summit Racing/BIGFOOT Monster Truck) will be bringing a bit of home to American troops overseas as part of the Armed Forces Entertainment-sponsored trip to Germany this November.

Team Summit drivers Jason Line, Dan Runte, and Rickie Jones visiting with Air Force personnel at Ramstein AFB, Germany, in 2010.

The trip marks the seventh consecutive year NHRA pro-class racers have visited troops overseas. This is the first visit for Greg Anderson; Jason Line, Rickie Jones, and Dan Runte made the trip in 2010.

Team Summit will be based at Ramstein Air Base, spending three days visiting with military personnel as well as wounded troops at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the Wounded Warrior Center. The 86th Services Squadron will host the drivers and provide transportation and logistics support during the visit. Major (retired) Dieter Protsch and Sfc (Retired) Wayne Reed of the Army Special Forces Association Chapter 64 (Carlisle, PA) will accompany the team as tour coordinators.

DHL Express USA has again donated their international express shipping service to deliver approximately five pallets’ worth of T-shirts, ball caps, banners, decals, Spike TV Powerblock DVDs, and other items to Ramstein, Germany. Team Summit racers will be handing out these goodies to service personnel during the trip. This marks the second year DHL Express has contributed to the cause.

“You Feel Like You’ve Done Something Good”. “I’m excited to be going back to Germany, and especially excited that Greg is going with us this year,” said Jason Line, driver of one of KB Racing’s Pontiac GXP Pro Stockers. “This will be my third time, and it’s just a great trip—you feel like you’ve done something good. Those people are doing good every day just doing their jobs, and if we’re able to bring them a little slice of home to show our appreciation for what they do, it is well worth the time. After all, they are the ones who allow us to have the freedoms we enjoy every day, so this is the very least we can do for them.”

Rickie Jones, who pilots a 1969 Camaro in ADRL Pro Nitrous and NHRA Pro Modified competition, echoed Line’s sentiments. “This will be my second year traveling overseas with Team Summit. It is truly an honor to meet and visit with the men and women that have sacrificed so much for our nation. The joy that we can bring by simply expressing our appreciation for their dedication and service is amazing. It is a true honor to be a part of this.” “It’s Important to Go”

Four-time NHRA Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson heard all about the visits from teammate Jason Line and committed to go this year. “Jason has gone the last couple years, and each time he returned from the trip he would tell me what a tremendous experience it was and what a great time he had,” said Anderson. “I’m glad to have the chance to join him this year. These people sacrifice so much to allow us to enjoy our freedom. I think it’s important to go and spend some time with them and show our appreciation. It’s going to be a great deal for me personally, and I can’t wait to get over there.”

Summit Racing/BIGFOOT Monster Truck driver Dan Runte said, “Our troops spend so much time away from their families and friends protecting all of us at home. Anything we can do to show them that we appreciate their sacrifice is time and effort well spent. They’re a big reason why we enjoy our freedoms as Americans.”

“Summit Racing is honored to once again have the opportunity to be a part of this trip and show continued support of our troops,“ explained Jim Greenleaf, Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports and Events Manager. “It was an eye-opening experience to see the men and women of our military in action when we visited last year, and were touched by just how much they appreciated our visit. We are looking forward to returning to Ramstein AFB, and visiting additional bases this year. Thanks go to Armed Forces Entertainment, Army Special Forces Association Chapter 64, and Wayne and Dieter for allowing us the honor of visiting the troops.”

Team Summit racers will be blogging during the trip. The blogs and photos will be posted on www.SummitRacing.com and www.NHRA.com.

Kyle Doyle to Pilot Firestone BIGFOOT in 2012

(Hazelwood, MO – BIGFOOT PR) – BIGFOOT 4×4 Inc. announced this week that team driver Kyle Doyle will take the reigns of the Firestone BIGFOOT® monster truck in 2012, kicking off his rookie season behind the wheel of the team’s red, white, and blue Firestone flagship.

27-year old Doyle, who previously had been a fill-in driver for the team, moved into a full-time slot behind the wheel of BIGFOOT #10 in February of 2011 and immediately set about the task of proving his worth on the team’s roster. After spending the bulk of 2011 performing car-crush exhibitions in BIGFOOT #10 (decked out in 2011 Firestone/MLB All-Star Game colors), Doyle competed in the first two races of his driving career at a pair of FMG/Skyfire Productions monster truck races in Massachusetts and New Hampshire in September.

This caught the industry off-guard, as the Firestone/MLB BIGFOOT currently is the team’s first and only Chevrolet body/engine combination in their 36 year history, and was originally not slated to ever see competition! Needless to say, this surprise was warmly welcomed by fans, and, despite his lack of on-track experience and an unproven engine combination, Doyle was able to quickly find victory lane. Over the course of seven shows between the two events, Doyle took the top qualifying spot all seven nights, won all seven final rounds, and took six out of seven freestyle competitions.

“I can’t even describe how cool it was to compete in a monster truck for the first time, and for it to be a Chevrolet-powered BIGFOOT truck on top of that!” said Doyle. “When you spend your whole childhood fascinated with these things, and then you spend your whole adult life working towards the chance to race one of them, it is very gratifying when a team like BIGFOOT puts their faith in you and gives you a shot at it. That’s huge in my book, and I can’t thank them enough.”

With Darron Schnell moving into the new Vi-cor sponsored Bigfoot for 2012, Kyle Doyle will compete for Rookie of the Year in the Firestone Bigfoot ride.

Jim Kramer, former BIGFOOT driver and current BIGFOOT VP of Research, Technology, & Driver Development, worked with Doyle at his first racing event and was optimistic about the results: “We’re proud that Kyle has become a first-tier driver at BIGFOOT. We increased Kyle’s training opportunities over the last several months and he’s shown us his drive AND his ability to represent our company on and off the track!”

Kramer added that “Kyle’s recent race wins and his attention to truck safety show us that he’s ready to further his monster truck driving career at BIGFOOT. We’re expecting good things from him in the future!”

BIGFOOT VP of Sponsorships and Business Development, Bob Trent, was equally enthusiastic about Doyle’s transition to the Firestone ride: “Kyle came to us a couple years ago with a deep background in the industry. Once we started giving him some seat time, we realized that we really should get him into a truck full-time! His results speak for themselves. Everyone here is looking forward to seeing what he can do in 2012, especially during the indoor season.”

Doyle is extremely excited to be carrying the team’s Firestone colors heading into his rookie racing season. “With Darron [Schnell] picking up the flag for our new Vi-COR sponsorship and moving out of the Firestone ride, I am looking forward to representing Firestone in 2012! They have been with BIGFOOT since 1991, so it’s a BIG responsibility. I’ve got a lot of learning to do, but with a great sponsor and a great team of people behind me, I’m very excited to see what happens!”

For more information about Team BIGFOOT, please visit www.Bigfoot4x4.com.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A big congratulations to former TMB Staff Member Kyle Doyle on realizing his dream of being a full-time monster truck driver. Best of luck in 2012!

This sponsorship stands as yet another ground-breaking achievement by Team BIGFOOT in their quest to introduce non-automotive related sponsors to the monster truck industry.

The crown jewel of this new sponsorship will be the “Vi-COR® The Power of V®” branded BIGFOOT® monster truck, which features Vi-COR and BIGFOOT logos atop a black and white “dairy cow” themed paint scheme that will be sure to turn heads and attract attention, along with a corresponding tractor-trailer transporter. The Vi-COR/Celmanax BIGFOOT will make its public debut October 4th through the 8th in Madison, WI as part of the Vi-COR display at the World Dairy Expo. The awesome looking new Vi-COR Bigfoot is unveiled at the Bigfoot 4x4 shop in Hazelwood, Missouri.

“We are extremely excited about this new partnership with Vi-COR,” said BIGFOOT VP of Sponsorships & Business Development, Bob Trent. “We feel that Vi-COR’s history of innovation and quality, and their use of extensive research to achieve successful results, aligns perfectly with those same values for which BIGFOOT has been known for over 35 years!”

Vi-COR President, Mark Holt, was equally enthusiastic about this new venture for the two companies: “Much like Vi-COR, the BIGFOOT operation started off small and through hard work, dedication, and innovation has become truly a global influence in their field. Our customers and many of BIGFOOT’s fans are the same people, and we feel that working with BIGFOOT is the perfect way to help convey to our customers that using Vi-COR’s Celmanax is the perfect way to flatten their feeding costs!” Fans can expect to see the Vi-COR/Celmanax BIGFOOT at 20 or more events each year as part of the two-year agreement, along with a full merchandise campaign to support the new truck. The Vi-COR/Celmanax BIGFOOT is slated to compete in the 2012 Monster Nationals points championship alongside the defending series champ and team truck, the Monster Nationals E3 Spark Plugs BIGFOOT, and is sure to be a hit with fans.

Indy 4-Wheel Jamboree Championship Weekend Recap

(By Ross Z. Bonar) The weekend marked the 30th Anniversary of the 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana and how better to celebrate than with an incredible battle for the 2011 Monster Truck Thunder Drags season championship. Hall Brothers Racing entered the weekend looking to extend their decade of domination in this series to an unheard of eleventh year in a row, but 2011 would be their biggest challenge yet as legendary BIGFOOT driver Dan Runte entered the weekend 80 points ahead of Mark Hall and Raminator.

In addition to the monster truck championship battle, Jamboree fans would be treated to the usual great lineup of entertainment, from show’n’shine trucks to mud bogs, tough trucks and everything in between. For the 30th Anniversary event, Family Events pulled out all the stops, bringing in 12 race trucks, the young star Kid KJ and the incredibly popular Megasaurus car-eating dinosaur. The monster truck lineup included:  E3 Spark Plugs Bigfoot #16, Raminator, Rammunition, Avenger, General Tire, Lucas Oil Stabilizer, Heavy Hitter, Star Marshal, Stomper, Black Knight, Airdog Diesel and Chalkboard Chuck.

A great 12 truck lineup was assembled to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana.

A slight damper was cast on the weekend’s festivities however as Family Events was forced to make some layout changes due to the ongoing investigation into the Indiana State Fair stage collapse. The main grandstand was still closed and unavailable, so Family Events transported in temporary bleachers to accommodate the great crowds on hand for the event.

The collapsed stage remains as the investigation continues into the cause of the terrible tragedy prior to the Sugarland concert at last month's Indiana State Fair.

Those layout changes fortunately did not stop Head Track Official Lee Collins from putting together a wild S-course racing layout that featured a unique rhythm section not often seen in monster truck racing. This would be sure to present an interesting challenge for the drivers and another exciting twist in the title bout.

With four shows scheduled for the weekend, three of those including side by side racing, the points picture could change in a heartbeat. See below for the standings entering the weeekned:

Point Standings – Entering the Weekend

1st – Bigfoot – 1480
2nd – Raminator – 1400

Also presented here is the Family Events point scale:

How Points Are Awarded

1st – 200 points
2nd – 160 points
Semi-Finals – 120 points
1st Round – 80 points

Action kicked off Friday night with a freestyle-only warm-up to the weekend’s competition and all the trucks put on a great show for the fans in attendance.

The real action got started Saturday afternoon as the trucks took to the S-course for some intense side by side racing. The focus was on the championship contenders in round one as Mark Hall in Raminator made quick work of Bobby Holman in Lucas Oil Stabilizer while Dan Runte in Bigfoot dodged the powerful punch of the Heavy Hitter, taking out the impressive rookie Derick Anson in a close race. Mat Dishman looked strong in Rammunition as he took down Bryan Wright in Black Knight while Dave Radzierez cruised to victory in the Star Marshal when Chris Bergeron in General Tire was unable to make the call.

The semi-final round began with Raminator taking on Star Marshal for a trip to the finals and Mark Hall laid down a solid pass to defeat Razeriez. That win put the pressure on Runte as he had to race Mat Dishman in Rammunition. The two waged a great battle but Dishman used the big momentum off the outside lane coming to the line to edge out Runte and knock out Bigfoot. This would effectively close the point gap to 40 as Hall moved on to the finals.

In the all Hall Brothers Racing finale, Hall would have the chance to tie it all up by taking down his teammate. But in monster truck racing, there aren’t any team orders and Dishman would pull out all the stops to try and beat the boss. In another great battle, Dishman used the outside lane once again to carry incredible speed coming to the line, leaving Raminator in the dust and taking his third win of the 2011 General Tire Monster Truck Thunder Drags season. The race would be a missed opportunity for Hall as he exited the first race of the weekend still 40 points behind Runte.

A Hall Brothers Racing showdown in the finals of the Saturday afternoon race would see Mat Dishman in Rammunition in victory lane.

Here is a look at the racing bracket results and points after race #1:

Round One

Raminator def. Lucas Oil Stabilizer
Star Marshal def. General Tire (General Tire unable to make call)
Bigfoot def. Heavy Hitter
Rammunition def. Black Knight

Semi-Finals

Raminator def. Star Marshal
Rammunition def. Bigfoot

Final Round

Rammunition def. Raminator

Unofficial Point Standings – After Saturday Afternoon Race

1st – Bigfoot – 1600
2nd – Raminator – 1560
3rd – Rammunition – 1440
4th – General Tire – 1200
5th – Lucas Oil Stabilizer – 960
6th – Star Marshal – 920
7th – Avenger – 880
8th – Chalkboard Chuck – 640
9th – Crushstation – 600
10th – Samson – 440
11th – Black Knight – 320
12th – Heavy Hitter – 80

Kid KJ impressed all weekend as he continues to improve, pulling off some great moves in his mini monster truck, the Monster Bear.

After a great freestyle display from all the trucks to close out the afternoon event, the teams would go to work on the trucks with one race under their belts and a better idea of the adjustments needed to improve on the setups for the evening race. The focus in round one would continue to be on Bigfoot and Raminator with the gap close to just 40 points.

Rich Hilgendorf leads the way in freestyle Saturday afternoon with a great performance from the Avenger.

Round one racing would see Dan Runte in Bigfoot make quick work of Joe Nichter in Stomper while Mark Hall in Raminator would receive a bye run when Rich Hilgendorf in Avenger was unable to make the call due to rear steering issues. Derick Anson in Heavy Hitter made Mat Dishman sweat in their match-up as he was pulling away when the truck swung wide in the final turn, making contact with and knocking over the giant O’Reilly’s inflatable to the delight of the crowd. Dishman would go on to win. “Hillbilly” would be back behind the wheel of the Black Knight and was very solid in his win over Bobby Holman in Chalkboard Chuck.

The semi-finals would see what might have been one of the most important races of the weekend as the two championship contenders went head to head. If Runte could win it, he would move back to 80 points ahead of Hall, while if Raminator won, the points race would be all tied up. Both trucks charged off the line, but Runte made great time through the rhythm section, entering the final turn very close on the inside. With a perfect turn, Runte was able to put the power down and leave Raminator behind, taking a huge win to move on to the finals. In the other semi-final match-up, “Hillbilly” in Black Knight made Mat Dishman work for it but lost it in the final turn as Rammunition powered by for the victory.

With an 80 point lead going into the final round, Runte could effectively wrap up the championship with a win in the finals. If he could carry a 120 point lead into the final race, he would need only to start and even if Hall won the Sunday event, the points would result in a tie for the championship. The tiebreaker would be # of race wins on the season and that would go to Runte and Bigfoot with 5 wins.

Not being exactly aware of the math, Dan Runte did know that a win in the finals would be huge and had Bigfoot on kill, ready to try and take down Mat Dishman and Rammunition. Dishman had looked great all weekend in the outside lane coming to the finish and that is the lane he had for the finals. The trucks stayed near even to the final turn where Runte whipped Bigfoot around in a perfect turn allowing him to get the power down as Dishman came charging hard on the outside. At the line, it was Runte taking the win by about a truck length but Rammunition came flying by in the air leaving the trucks side by side as they landed.

Dan Runte in Bigfoot takes a decisive final round victory Saturday night in Indy, while Mat Dishman charges hard toward the shutdown area.

Both trucks took hard landings but Bigfoot landed sideways, breaking a sway bar and sending the truck towards Rammunition. Runte gave a great effort to gather up Bigfoot but it would be to no avail as the trucks made contact, sending both out of control. There was no saving Bigfoot as Runte went for a hard rollover onto the cab and then back onto the wheels. Dishman continued on trying to save the truck but finally the tires caught in the dirt sending Rammunition over hard onto the cage.

Bigfoot and Rammunition make contact in the shutdown area which would send both trucks out of control and over onto their lid.

Track officials and crew members and drivers ran to the trucks as thankfully both drivers emerged slightly shaken up but otherwise unscathed from the hard crash. Officials made a quick review to ensure the call was correct, and yes it was Bigfoot by a truck length at the finish line taking the win and all but wrapping up the championship.

After a lengthy cleanup on the track and darkness consuming the Indiana State Fairgrounds, the decision was made by track officials to cancel freestyle in the interest of safety. With the layout changes due to the closing of the main grandstand, the big lights atop the grandstand were unavailable leaving much of the track in near complete darkness.

To clinch the championship title, Runte and the Bigfoot team would at least have to make an appearance in round one in the final race on Sunday. As the team checked over the truck, they found several spots in the chassis that would need welding and immediately sent out calls to team drivers Larry Swim and Darron Schnell to be on standby to bring Bigfoot #14 and Bigfoot #11 from their display events to Indianapolis for Runte to compete in on Sunday. After further review of the damage, the team decided to make the repairs to #16 and working through the night and into the morning, the truck was ready to race on Sunday.

The very first race would see the championship decided without question or need for a tiebreaker as Dan Runte and Bigfoot cruised to an easy victory over Joe Nichter in Stomper. With the teams not 100% of the points math in the pits, all Mark Hall knew was that he needed to win and hope for the best, and he began that quest by marching to victory over Rich Hilgendorf in Avenger. Derick Anson in Heavy Hitter continued to impress as he defeated Mat Dishman in Rammunition, while Bobby Holman scored his first round win of the weekend, driving Chalkboard Chuck to the victory over Black Knight.

Even though the championship math had already been decided, this was still not certain in the pits setting up a huge match-up between Bigfoot and Raminator in the semi-finals. In what was probably the closest race of the entire weekend, Dan Runte edged Mark Hall by less than a tire length to erase any doubt as he moved on to the finals and was officially announced by Family Events to the crowd as the 2011 General Tire Monster Truck Thunder Drags Champion. Derick Anson cruised to the win over Chalkboard Chuck and was looking to really make an impression with a win in the finals.

Dan Runte defeats Mark Hall in the closest race of the weekend in the Sunday semi-finals.

The championship battle started close going into Indy, but Dan Runte like the legend and champion he is, never faltered and now entered the final round with the opportunity to celebrate the title with yet another win on the season. Anson was looking to spoil the Bigfoot party and gave a great effort, giving Runte all he could handle. As they came out of the final turn, Runte began to pull away and took the big win. Bigfoot cruised by the stands as they crowd saluted Dan Runte as the Sunday racing victor and the 2011 General Tire Monster Truck Thunder Drags champion.

Dan Runte takes the final win of the weekend on Sunday, taking down the impressive Derick Anson in Heavy Hitter.

Freestyle would see great efforts from all the trucks and drivers as they closed out a great 30th Anniversary of the 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Chris Bergeron lets it all hang out in the General Tire machine in the Sunday freestyle finale.
